WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

In partnership with the Rivers & Lands Conservancy (RLC), Inlandia is offering Write Wild: An Open Space for Writing, a class on exploring nature to develop your own authentic voice.

Are you a writer (or an aspiring writer) with a love of nature and the outdoors? Join Rebecca K. O'Connor, author of nine reference books on the natural world as well as a falconry memoir, for this six-week class that includes a land steward-led hike in the Cienega Canyon Preserve and a celebratory public reading.

Topics for this series include "Using Your Outside Voice", "Inspiration in a Wilder World", and "Living Like Animals".

The workshop will be held at the Riverside Public Library on Saturdays, beginning September 2, with the guided hike on September 23 and public reading on October 7. A sack lunch will be provided on the hike.

Rebecca K. O'Connor is the author of nine reference books on the natural world, including a best-selling parrot training guide The Perfectly Trained Parrot. She has also published a romance novel, Falcon's Return, and the award-winning falconry memoir Lift published by Red Hen Press. Her most recent novel is We Were Wilder, a self-published post-apocalyptic wilderness journey that is the first in a trilogy. She has an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of California, Riverside. Her essays and short stories have been published in numerous places, including South Dakota Review, Iron Horse Literary Review, Los Angeles Times Magazine, West, divide, The Coachella Review, Phantom Seed, Prime Number Magazine and The Rumpus. Her essays have been anthologized and nominated for the Pushcart Prize.

More	7 7:00 pm: ARTS WALK FOR BOOK LOVERS WITH CHRISTINE CHATTERTON 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm September 7, 2017 Arts Walk for Book Lovers is back Thursday, September 7, 2017 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The Inlandia Institute kicks off this season with "Traipsing through History: Researching and Using Authentic Sources in Historical Writing". This event will take place on the second floor of the Riverside Public Library, located at 3581 Mission Inn Ave, Riverside, CA 92501. Join local author Christine Chatterton as she presents the methods she used in conducting the historical research for her book, "Courage of the Heart: An American Odyssey 1915 to 1923". She will discuss how to best incorporate historical information effectively in your own writing of both true historical narratives and historical fiction. "Courage of the Heart: An American Odyssey 1915 to 1923", is a true historical narrative of World War I, based on the letters found in her husband's grandmother's house after her death. This is an intimate account of two families and four brothers from Western Illinois, each facing the Great War in uniquely different ways. It is the extraordinary love story of Haidee Wilson and Maurice Chatterton, written in their own words, spanning the years from 1915 until 1923. This is an odyssey of courage and hardship, war, death, illness, and finally survival and a love that endured. This is an American Odyssey. Christine Chatterton is an artist, author, poet, and teacher. She has taught reading improvement and special education, in Southern California, for almost thirty years, in every grade from elementary to college level. She writes from her heart, telling the stories of her life and family. Besides the historical narrative, Courage of the Heart: An American Odyssey 1915 to 1923, she has written and illustrated a children's book entitled Samuel's Alphabet Zoo. Her third published work, The Kids on Ford Street, is her own story of growing up in Detroit. She now divides her retirement time between writing, painting, making jewelry, visiting classrooms, traveling, and enjoying her family. This event is free and open to the public. More	28 10:00 am: BETTER THAN FICTION: WRITING YOUR MEMOIR WITH FLAIR 10:00 am – 12:00 pm September 28, 2017 Memoirs don't have to read like diaries or timelines. The best ones are written like good novels--with the same literary tools that make great romances and mysteries come alive. This seminar will help memoir writers turn their memoirs into compelling stories, with the same dialogue, description, pacing and narration that make fictional protagonists jump off the page. This five-session hands-on workshop will feature in-class exercises and real-time, constructive feedback for both those who've started their memoir and those who want to get started. The sessions will be held every other week. Session 1: Introduction - What is memoir and how to choose your story. We'll explore some best-selling memoirs and hear from a couple of memoir writers in our community. We'll go home with an assignment to start shaping our story. Session 2: Plotting the narrative arc - Developing your story line and getting started. We'll share our stories with each other, share feedback, and discuss techniques for organizing the narrative based on good fiction-writing techniques. Session 3: Writing great dialogue - How your characters express themselves. We'll discuss the basics for capturing speech and the various techniques for building character and scene through dialogue. We'll make our dialogue as compelling and telling as that in good fiction. Session 4: Setting and action - Creating a sense of place and moving the story forward. We'll discuss how to choose anecdotes that illustrate the story, and ways to put the reader in the midst of the story. We'll practice writing scene-setting narrative in class. Session 5: Self-editing and publishing your memoir - What are your options. We'll try some editing exercises and discuss your options for hiring editors and taking your memoir to print.
