1:00 pm: CONVERSATIONS AT THE CULVER: SHOLEH WOLPE IN CONVERSATION WITH ELLEN ESTILAI

October 1, 2017

On Sunday, October 1, 2017, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. join the Inlandia Institute for Conversations at the Culver. This month's conversation will feature author Sholeh Wolpe in Conversation with Ellen Estilai for "Conference of the Birds". The Barbara and Art Culver Center of the Arts is located at 3834 Main St, Riverside, CA 92501.

Join the conversation and hear the reading of award-winning translator Sholeh Wolpé as she recaptures the beauty and lyricism of one of Persian literature's most celebrated masterpieces.

Considered by Rumi to be "the master" of Sufi mystic poetry, Attar is best known for his epic poem "The Conference of the Birds", a magnificent allegorical tale about the soul's search for meaning. The poem recounts the perilous journey of the world's birds to the faraway peaks of Mount Qaf--a mythical mountain that wraps around the earth--in search for the mysterious Simurgh, their king. Attar's beguiling anecdotes and humor intermingle the sublime with the mundane, the spiritual with the worldly, and the religious with the metaphysical. Reflecting the entire evolution of Sufi mystic tradition, Attar's poem models the soul's escape from the mind's rational embrace.

Sholeh Wolpé is an Iranian-born poet, writer and public speaker. A recipient of the 2014 PEN/Heim, 2013 Midwest Book Award and 2010 Lois Roth Persian Translation prize, among others, Wolpé's literary work include four collections of poetry, a play, three books of translations, and three anthologies. About Wolpé's latest collection of poems, Keeping Time with Blue Hyacinths, Shelf Awareness Magazine writes, "A gifted Iranian-American poet beautifully explores love and the loss of love, beauty and war and the ghosts of the past." Wolpé's modern translation of "The Conference of the Birds" by the 12th century Iranian mystic poet, Attar (W.W. Norton), has been hailed by Reza Aslan as a translation that "is sure to be as timeless as the masterpiece itself." Wolpé's writings have been translated into eleven languages and included in numerous American and international anthologies and journals of poetry and fiction, and featured on programs such as Selected Shorts at Symphony Space and NPR. She has lived in the UK and Trinidad and is presently based in Los Angeles.

Ellen Estilai received her B.A. in Art from the University of California, Davis, and her M.A. in English Language and Literature from the University of Tehran. An arts administrator for over twenty years, she served as executive director of the Riverside Arts Council and the Arts Council for San Bernardino County and was the educational services manager of the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art.  She has taught English language, literature and writing at the University of Tehran, Cal State Bakersfield and in the University of San Francisco's external degree program. Her essay, "Front Yard Fruit," originally published in Alimentum: The Literature of Food, is included in New California Writing 2011 (Heyday) and was selected as a Notable Essay in The Best American Essays 2011. A Pushcart Prize nominee, her poetry and essays have also appeared in the journals Phantom Seed, Broad!, Snapdragon: A Journal of Art and Healing, Ink & Letters, and Heron Tree, and the anthologies Slouching Towards Mount Rubidoux Manor, (In)Visible Memoirs, Vol. 2., Writing from Inlandia, and HOME: Tall Grass Writers Guild Anthology. Ellen is a founding board member and past-president of the Inlandia Institute.

Praise for Wolpé's modern translation of "Conference of the Birds":

"Sholeh Wolpé's stunning new translation--the first in over 30 years--renders Attar's engaging, singular voice with wit and flourish/" -- Literary Hub

"Attar's grand allegory for the journey of the soul as it seeks union with the divine has influenced countless artists, poets, mystics, and believers around the world. But never before has it been rendered in English with such beauty, elegance, and precision. Wolpe's translation of this epic is sure to be as timeless as the masterpiece itself."-- Reza Aslan, best-selling author of No God But God, and Zealot

"In this beautiful rendering of Attar's Conference of the Birds, Sholeh Wolpe, herself a passionate poet, transports us to another time, another language & another world, while reminding us of how enduring & universal great works of imagination are, how they create spaces within which we not only acknowledge and appreciate our differences but also recognize & celebrate our shared humanity. Only a true poet could achieve such a feat."-- Azar Nafisi, author of Reading Lolita in Tehran

"I was struck by this accomplished translation, which moves the reader along from one stanza to the next in strong, compelling rhythms. I think what Sholeh Wolpé has done exceedingly well is to bring this medieval poem over into lively, contemporary English that feels absolutely right and not at all forced. It was a real pleasure to read and enjoy this text from a literature and a world I know so little about."-- Edith Grossman, author of Why Translation Matters

"In this new lyrical translation, Sholeh Wolpé uses her incredible skill as both poet and translator to bring Attar's spiritual masterpiece into accessible English. As close to the original a reader can come in translation, and imbued with the same kind of revelation, it makes clear why Attar remained such a strong influence on Rumi. The reader travels, along with the poet's birds, to greater spiritual insight through transcendent verse." -- Roger Sedarat, Persian translator

7:00 pm: ARTS WALK FOR BOOK LOVERS WITH JERRY MATHES

October 5, 2017

Come hear local author Jerry D. Mathes read from his latest book, Shipwrecks and Other Stories on October 5, 2017 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Stay afterwards for a conversation with Mathes on the art and craft of constructing stories based on job experiences.

Shipwrecks and Other Stories focuses on the men and women trying to rediscover who they are while struggling in love and longing, adultery and addiction, staying in a place and moving on. Characters in these tales haunt the fringes of their own lives shipwrecked in society as they seek identity in "stories...laced with hope and threaded through with moments of grace. Mathes shines the harsh light of realism on the daily conflicts, large and small, that define his characters' fears and desires and, often, determine their very survival." (Kim Barnes, author)

Jerry D. Mathes II a Jack Kent Cooke alumnus and is the author Ahead of the Flaming Front: A Life on Fire, winner of the North American Book Prize; an essay collection Fever and Guts: A Symphony; The Journal West: Poems, and Still Life, the winner of the Meadow Prize for the Novella. His short fiction collection, Shipwrecks and Other Stories received honorable mention in 2017 Los Angeles Book Festival. He is currently working with a producer to develop a film adapted from his memoir Ahead of the Flaming Front and finishing up his second memoir, In Strange Company. His photography, poems, essays, and short stories, have won numerous awards. In 2011, he produced a short film, "Drinking Sangria in the Cold War," which was adapted from one of his award winning short stories. He has worked as a martial arts instructor, an armor crewman, a construction worker, hotel auditor, car salesman, repo-man, delivery guy, cable guy, went logging, worked in forestry, crewed on several types of fishing vessels, fought wildfire on a helicopter-rappel crew, taught writing at the University of Idaho and Stephen F. Austin State University and taught the Southernmost Writers Workshop in the World at Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station Antarctica during the 2009-2010 and 2011-2012 Austral summer seasons where he worked in logistics. He also wrote and directed two short films while at the South Pole. In 2012 he produced a video essay about wildfire. He loves his two daughters very much.

This event will take place on the second floor of the Riverside Public Library, located at 3581 Mission Inn Ave, Riverside, CA 92501.

10:00 am: BETTER THAN FICTION: WRITING YOUR MEMOIR WITH FLAIR

October 12, 2017

Memoirs don't have to read like diaries or timelines. The best ones are written like good novels--with the same literary tools that make great romances and mysteries come alive. This seminar will help memoir writers turn their memoirs into compelling stories, with the same dialogue, description, pacing and narration that make fictional protagonists jump off the page. This five-session hands-on workshop will feature in-class exercises and real-time, constructive feedback for both those who've started their memoir and those who want to get started. The sessions will be held every other week.

Session 1: Introduction - What is memoir and how to choose your story. We'll explore some best-selling memoirs and hear from a couple of memoir writers in our community. We'll go home with an assignment to start shaping our story.

Session 2: Plotting the narrative arc - Developing your story line and getting started. We'll share our stories with each other, share feedback, and discuss techniques for organizing the narrative based on good fiction-writing techniques.

Session 3: Writing great dialogue - How your characters express themselves. We'll discuss the basics for capturing speech and the various techniques for building character and scene through dialogue. We'll make our dialogue as compelling and telling as that in good fiction.

Session 4: Setting and action - Creating a sense of place and moving the story forward. We'll discuss how to choose anecdotes that illustrate the story, and ways to put the reader in the midst of the story. We'll practice writing scene-setting narrative in class.

Session 5: Self-editing and publishing your memoir - What are your options. We'll try some editing exercises and discuss your options for hiring editors and taking your memoir to print.

10:00 am: GETTING FROM HERE TO THERE: FROM MANUSCRIPT TO BOOK

October 16, 2017

The chances of being traditionally published today are slimmer than ever. With e-book sales soaring and publishers consolidating, traditionally published books are a small minority of the 4,000 books published every day. For the vast majority of aspiring writers who want to see their works in print or in an e-book, independent publishing, self-publishing, and hybrid publishing have become the only options. But fear keeps many new writers from approaching the steep learning curve of indie publishing and self-marketing, and many of them don't know where to start.  This series of workshops will demystify the steps to indie publishing, helping fence-sitters get off the rail and into print. The five "Getting from Here to There" workshops will cover:

Session 1: Choosing your publishing path - The main considerations in choosing your publishing route. We discuss the various options from DIY to Create Space and Ingram Spark to hybrid publishers; what determines which path is best for you and what resources you need.

Session 2: Getting your book ready - Preparing your manuscript and cover. We discuss writing second, third and fourth drafts, the four types of editing, beta readers, front and back of book materials, formatting and cover design.

Session 3: Time to GO! - Publishing,  printing, and distributing.  We discuss metadata, copyrights, the importance of proofs, writing marketing copy and its uses, pricing, publishing e-books and audio books, printing and distribution.

Session 4:  Marketing essentials - The social media musts. The three essentials in marketing your book are author websites, Author Central, and an author Facebook page. We look at website options and set up a Facebook page.

Session 5: Other marketing options - Going beyond the basics. We discuss advertising, consultants, reviews, personal appearances, book give-aways, bloggers, contests and distribution options.
