11:00 am: THE RENAISSANCE WRITERS: WRITERS WHO ART, ARTISTS WHO WRITE INAUGURAL EXHIBITION AND EVENTS

May 24, 2018 June 23, 2018

Inlandia Institute is thrilled to host the inaugural Renaissance Writers Group event featuring the work of writers who are also artists. This project has been several years in the making and represents many hours of collaboration and hard work. Artists include Jenna Bao, Lavina Blossom, Deenaz Coachbuilder, and many more!

The exhibit runs May 24th to June 23rd with three related events: Opening reception and reading on June 2nd from 2 - 4 pm, Arts Walk reception on June 7th from 6 - 9 pm, and Cloudburst writing workshop on June 9 from 1 - 3 pm hosted by Cindy Bousquet-Harris.

Exhibition and related events will be held at the Riverside Community Arts Association Gallery located at 3870 Lemon Street, Riverside, CA 92501.

“The Renaissance Group: Writers Who Art, Artists Who Write, spotlights a group of accomplished writers who are also talented artists. Though the works in the exhibition are small in size, their themes are incredibly wide ranging. All members of the Inlandia Institute, these creatives have come together to share a part of their artistic journey that involves practicing multiple art forms. The original idea for this multi-talented art show was first proposed by Deenaz Coachbuilder, whose lovely paintings and poems are included here. Also on view are works by over 15 artists who span various art mediums, including photography, sculpture, painting and mixed media. In addition, many of their written works are in the exhibition binder. I encourage you to take your time both looking and reading. Some artistic treasures take a little time before they give you a deep insight, while others will hit you fine and strong, in an instant. Don’t miss out on either experience. Enjoy the work of the Renaissance Group. Look. Read. Enjoy.”- Lisa Henry, Independent Curator Coordinator, SALT+SPICE

About Cindy Bousquet-Harris’ Cloudburst workshop:

Does it bring to mind a terrifying storm, dodging hail, soaked to the skin because you forgot your umbrella (again), a commuter’s nightmare as you try to avoid flooded roads? Or does it speak to you of release, freedom, a wild energy, nourishment for living things, a pouring-out of good? Come and explore the many sides of cloudburst, discover what it means to you, and you might even experience your own outpouring of creativity. View photographs, see and listen to poems related to clouds and sky, and join us for some no-pressure, go-at-your-own-pace writing exercises in a supportive atmosphere – with or without your umbrella.

1:00 pm: CONVERSATIONS AT THE CULVER: VOICES AGAINST VIOLENCE

June 1, 2018

Voices Against Violence seeks to contextualize the impact of violence through a humanities framework by providing a program that supports reflection, conversation, and self-empowerment, highlighting the personal experience of individuals affected by violence in the community of San Bernardino County and two of its outlying cities, Redlands and Riverside. San Bernardino is still healing from the 2015 Dec. 2 terror attack, and the 2017 North Park Elementary School shooting. Other incidents of violence including domestic abuse and police brutality are also unfortunately still prevalent. This program included writing workshops and will culminate in a public exhibition this summer. This special Conversations at the Culver will invite the community to weigh in on the conversation.

This project was made possible with support from California Humanities, a non-profit partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Visit www.calhum.org.

4:00 pm: 'ROMOLAND' FEATURING BEN STOLTZFUS AND JUDITH PALMER

June 3, 2018

Romoland, a postmodern event conjoining feminist artist Judith Palmer and novelist Ben Stoltzfus, uses twenty-five art works as generative surfaces for a series of dialogues between a man and a woman. The images and the text explore the historical subjection of women by men, their deliverance through art, and the dismantling of cultural codes. Both texts foreground the voice of the Other as it manifests itself in the traces, lines, and cracks of speech—be they visual or verbal. The arabesques of the woman’s sensibilities oppose the squares of man’s authority. Her art speaks and his text sees. Together, they unveil another space between the pictures and the text—the body of bliss and equality—in a way that is ironic, comic, and playful.

This event will be held at Cellar Door Books, located at 5225 Canyon Crest Dr Ste 30A, Riverside, California 92507. This event is free and open to the public.

1:00 pm: THE RENAISSANCE WRITERS: WRITERS WHO ART, ARTISTS WHO WRITE INAUGURAL EXHIBITION AND EVENTS

June 9, 2018

Come and explore the many sides of cloudburst, discover what it means to you, and you might even experience your own outpouring of creativity.
