8:30 am: 2018 WRIGHTWOOD LITERARY FESTIVAL

September 30, 2018

Local artists from the mile-high mountain community of Wrightwood are putting together the town’s fourth annual literary festival the last weekend of September.
Guest faculty this year include novelist and publisher Yi Shun Lai (author of Not a Self-Help Book: The Misadventures of Marty Wu), the cross-genre poet Nicelle Davis (The Walled Wife), and journalist-poet Alejandro Escudé (My Earthbound Eye), with a keynote presentation and conversation with award-winning Young Adult author and poet Ron Koertge (Shakespeare Bats Cleanup).
In addition to the usual fiction, poetry, and editing workshops, the festival features new classes in parody songwriting, news poetry, community building, and the business of being an author. Some workshops are geared toward experienced writers, while others are offered for more casual readers.
For $55, festival registration includes any two workshops, lunch, the keynote presentation, and free entry into the annual “soapku” contest and Wrightwood Poetry Slam. Saturday night and Sunday festivities are free to the public, including the guest faculty reading, a group hike, presentation of the annual Young Authors Award, and a poetry slam, where poets will compete in a rowdy contest of verse for a $200 prize. 7:00 pm: ARTS WALK FOR BOOK LOVERS FEATURING BEN STOLTZFUS AND HIS NEW BOOK, 'FALLING AND OTHER STORIES'

October 4, 2018

On Thursday, October 4, at 7:00 p.m., join us for the first installment of Inlandia’s Arts Walk for Book Lovers at the Main branch of the Riverside Public Library, downtown, upstairs, on the first Thursday of every month. In October, our featured author is Ben Stoltzfus, who will be presenting and discussing his newest publication, Falling and Other Stories (Anaphora Press, 2018).

Falling and Other Stories, a novella and six short fictions, is by turn mythic and realistic, moving and wistful, innovative and traditional. It maps a wide geography of human emotions: lust, adventure, love, alienation, explicit violence and implicit passion. Ben Stoltzfus makes each character--a glamour girl, a scuba queen, a shaman, a mountain climber, a skier, a ball-court superstar, women in distress, even strangers--come vividly alive.

About Ben Stoltzfus

Ben Stoltzfus is Professor Emeritus of Comparative Literature and Creative Writing at the University of California, Riverside. He is a novelist, translator, literary critic and internationally recognized inter-arts scholar. He has published 12 monographs of literary criticism, five novels and one collection of short stories. Romoland, a pictonovel, his most recent publication, was written in collaboration with Judith Palmer, the artist. He has received many awards: Fulbright, Camargo, Gradiva, Humanities, Creative Arts, and MLA. Stoltzfus lives in Riverside, California, with Judith Palmer, his wife.

Reading will be followed by light refreshments and book sales and signing.

The Riverside Public Library is located at 3581 Mission Inn Avenue in downtown Riverside. This event is free and open to the public.

1:30 pm: CONVERSATIONS AT THE CULVER: 'DANCING IN THE SANTA ANA WINDS'

October 7, 2018

On Sunday, October 7, 2018, please join Inlandia as we welcome back liz gonzález as we help her celebrate the launch of her book, Dancing in the Santa Ana Winds: Poems y Cuentos New and Selected. Reading and discussion will feature Frances Vasquez in conversation with liz gonzález.

In “Dancing in the Santa Ana Winds: Poems y Cuentos New and Selected,” liz gonzález explores memories, pivotal experiences, and cultural influences that shaped her: The death of a young father, family relationships that nurture and challenge, and the joys and struggles of growing up as a nontraditional Catholic Mexican American. Set against the diverse landscapes of the San Bernardino Valley and Los Angeles, these richly textured and sometimes humorous works, real and imagined, illuminate the trials and beauty of girls’ and women’s journeys to reclaim themselves.

Suzanne Lummis writes, “[o]verlaid with the rituals and imagery of the Catholic church and 70s rock, funk, and R&B bands pouring from car radios, the Inland Empire is alive with culture, sensation and the fullness of life."
