When we join African American culture with technology and the future we get Afrofuturism, a genre shaped by an ideology of "blackness" as it can be far, far in the future. In this discussion Nikia Chaney, Lisa Henry, and Cassidy Parong will explore ideas of Afrofuturism as it relates to literature, poetry, and visual style. The event will include special announcements about the return of shufpoetry.

Join Inlandia poet Romaine Washington in conversation with artist and educator Richard Allen May III and artist Charles Bibb and they seek to inform, encourage, and inspire other Black artists in the region. This Blacklandia event will highlight the careers of these successful Black male Inland Empire artists – and reach out to new and aspiring creatives. Audience participants will be invited to submit ekphrastic poems (poems written in response to a work of art) as inspired by two different works provided by the artists.

Artist and educator, Richard Allen May III comes with a wealth of knowledge about the AfriCOBRA Movement, having written the forward to AfriCOBRA: Experimental Art Toward a School of Thought, published by Duke University, 2020. He is a staff writer at Artillery magazine and his work has been displayed in art galleries throughout the Inland Empire, as well as exhibits throughout the United States. May has taught courses in community colleges, universities, and prisons and will discuss his artwork in the context of community. https://richardmayart.com/
