"More Dreamers of the Golden Dream" AUTHOR TALK with Susan Straight and Douglas McCulloh

    October 2, 2021

Join Inlandia Institute for a conversation with writer Susan Straight and photographer Douglas McCulloh as they discuss their powerful new book, More Dreamers of the Golden Dream, based on their 2013 Riverside Art Museum exhibit by the same name. The show brought an entire community together to share stories from four generations of Californians, and now, eight years later, Straight and McCulloh return with a rich collection of essays and images that continue the chronicle of Riverside’s Eastside experience. Register now for a discussion of their collaboration – and get a sneak peek into the upcoming, updated exhibition at Riverside Art Museum, which will open October 7, 2021 and run through January 2, 2022.

On Zoom. To register for the author talk with Susan Straight and Douglas McCulloh: https://tinyurl.com/MoreDreamers

Join Inlandia as we welcome two new Hillary Gravendyk Prize-winning poetry collections into the world. Authors Bronwen Tate of The Silk the Months Ignore and Adam D. Martinez of Remyth: A Postmodernist Ritual and special guest readers will read from, discuss, and celebrate the publication of their debut poetry collections.

The Silk the Moths Ignore animates the liminal, sometimes gothic, spaces of miscarriage, pregnancy, and early parenthood. It sings, bleeds, and casts spells to "carry hope like a weight."

Remyth: A Postmodernist Ritual is Hip-Hop and Punk. It's high art meeting low art at the church altar. It is a baptism and an exorcism. A Works Cited page at the crossroads with remix culture.

Bronwen Tate writes poems and essays that have appeared in The Rumpus, Bennington Review, Contemporary Literature, and elsewhere. She lives in Vancouver, BC and teaches in the School of Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia. Read more of her work at https://www.bronwentate.com/ or follow her on Twitter or Instagram @bronwentate.

Adam Daniel Martinez first scraped his knee playing in his hometown of San Bernardino, California. Since then, as a first-generation Chicano college student, he has earned a dual MA/MFA in English and Creative Writing at Chapman University. Currently, Adam enjoys sharing his love for words with his students as an English professor at Chaffey College. He lives in Redlands, California with his wife and two cats, Virginia and Percival.

Join Inlandia Institute and KayJo Creatives for Harvesting Balance: A Painting and Storytelling Workshop. Keya Vance and Natalie Graham will lead participants through a series of guided and meditative painting and writing activities. These activities are designed to connect arts practice to mindfulness, storytelling, and balance. We will consider the power of affirming and integrating fragments and messiness as part of creating art and an artist’s statement. The workshop is free and all materials will be provided (although a donation toward material costs is appreciated). Boxed lunches will be available for $15.

In April 2018, Natalie J. Graham (Poet Laureate of Orange County) and Keya Vance founded KayJo Creatives, an artistic event planning and management company, with a mission to create community and reveal the beauty of humanity. In addition to creating a range of media deliverables for their clients, they host joyful and engaging workshops and events that empower diverse creators at all stages of development in Orange and San Bernardino County.

Alaina studied food writing with NYTimes writer Jeannette Ferrary and wrote about wine while working as regional director for Wines West in San Francisco. Her inspiration for many articles came from her friendship with Maggie Waldron, who operated the Ketcham Test Kitchen in San Francisco.

For several years, Alaina has led creative writing and memoir writing workshops for Inlandia Institute. She has spoken on food and wine pairing, food irradiation, and her adventures in the wine business.

The previous Inlandia food writing series took place online from October-November 2021, and participants included a restaurant owner, home chefs and enthusiastic writers of all levels, from Los Angeles to the Inland Empire and even the San Francisco Bay area. The response was so encouraging, and the writing so fascinating, that Inlandia and Alaina are pleased to present another series of food writing workshops – stories told through the lens of food and drink.

Each 90-minute workshop will include 2 writing prompts, with time to create a food-related story for both prompts.

Some topics we will address are food history, sustainability, nutrition and health, family stories, cookbooks, food and travel, culinary memoirs, and the politics of food.

Resources: Reading lists, podcasts, magazines, web sites, blogs, YouTube. We will discuss how to submit articles for publication.
