When we join African American culture with technology and the future we get Afrofuturism, a genre shaped by an ideology of "blackness" as it can be far, far in the future. In this discussion Nikia Chaney, Lisa Henry, and Cassidy Parong will explore ideas of Afrofuturism as it relates to literature, poetry, and visual style. The event will include special announcements about the return of shufpoetry.

Bring your afrocentric/futuristic/psychedelic/science fiction/outerspace/funk poems for the open mic starting at 3:00 PM!

13 1:00 pm: Riverside Women Creating Change Book Launch! 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm October 13, 2024 On Sunday afternoon, October 13, please join Inlandia at the Civil Rights Institute of Inland Southern California for the launch of Riverside Women Creating Change—Stories and Inspiration. The program runs from 1:00-3:00 PM, with doors opening at 12:30. The Riverside Resistance Revival Chorus will be on hand to perform, and CRIISC’s Homegrown Heroes exhibit—of which there is considerable overlap—will be open to our guests. Light refreshments will be served. We hope to see you there! Reluctant activists: Throughout Riverside's history, women have been at the forefront of community activism, but few have adopted that label. Instead, they were women simply doing what they knew was right. They were grassroots preservationists, speaking out and speaking up. They were building peace. Protecting our environment. Ryan teaches English at Riverside City College, and her passion is helping adult students and their families enjoy the merits of both ASL and the English language.
