6:30 pm: “Remembering the Civil Rights Act: Looking Back While Moving Forward”

August 3, 2023

“Remembering the Civil Rights Act: Looking Back While Moving Forward”

Riverside Public Library – Community Room

3900 Mission Inn Avenue, Riverside 92501

Next summer marks the 60th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, which was signed into law by President Lyndon Baines Johnson on July 2, 1964 – almost 100 years after the end of the Civil War. It was the most sweeping civil rights legislation since Reconstruction.

Yet, sixty years later, discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, and national origin remains profoundly impactful. Old issues re-emerge as new ones, in new and sometimes old ways. And so, in cooperation with the Civil Rights Institute of Southern California and the Center for Social Justice and Civil Liberties, Inlandia is proud to launch a season of civil rights-based talks for writers, readers, and other interested humans as part of our First Thursdays Arts Walk programming with Riverside Public Library. We hope you will join the conversation.

The series begins on Thursday, August 3, with “Remembering the Civil Rights Act: Looking Back While Moving Forward.” Join us for a discussion of what the Civil Rights Act meant in a political and historical context, and how it impacted America’s way forward. Hear from those who remember the times before, learn what has been accomplished since, and consider the work yet to be done.

Doors open at 6:30 PM, the program begins at 7:00. After the program, please join us as we walk across Mission Inn Avenue to visit the Civil Rights Institute from 8:00-8:30!

4:00 pm: Hillary Gravendyk 2021 Poetry Prize Book Launch

August 5, 2023

Looking for some live poetry to go with a cool drink this August? Then join Inlandia at Riverside Main Library’s Community Room on Saturday, August 5, at 4:00 PM, and celebrate the publication of two exciting new poetry books with us! How to Know You're Dreaming When You're Dreaming, Lesson One by Angelica Maria Barraza Tran (National Hillary Gravendyk Poetry Prize, 2021) and Our Lady of Perpetual Desert by Alexandra Martinez (Hillary Gravendyk Regional Prize, 2021) are hot off the press and ready to launch.

And for the first time, both the National and Regional prize winners hail from the Inlandia region! National prize winner Angelica Maria Barraza Tran lives in Redlands, and Regional prize winner Alexandra Martinez is a resident of Yucca Valley. Each has been awarded $1,000 and book publication. Help us celebrate these talented local poets and welcome their beautiful collections into the world with poetry readings, snapping fingers, and summertime refreshments provided by Riverside’s beloved sculpture garden/taqueria, Tio’s Tacos.

Details: Saturday, August 5, 2023, from 4:00-6:00 PM, at Riverside Main Library Community Room, 3900 Mission Inn Avenue, Riverside 92501.
