Join Inland Empire poet and educator Romaine Washington for an empowering conversation with the founders and facilitators of Healthy Heritage’s innovative Broken Crayons Still Color Program. Designed to teach members of the African American community about mental health, participants are invited to engage in a free, culturally infused eight-week course where poetry, videos, collaborative assignments, and discussions are key.

Inlandia Institute’s Blacklandia Presents: Artist Talk with Romaine Washington

Join Inlandia poet Romaine Washington in conversation with artist and educator Richard Allen May III and artist Charles Bibb and they seek to inform, encourage, and inspire other Black artists in the region. This Blacklandia event will highlight the careers of these successful Black male Inland Empire artists – and reach out to new and aspiring creatives. Audience participants will be invited to submit ekphrastic poems (poems written in response to a work of art) as inspired by two different works provided by the artists.

Artist and educator, Richard Allen May III comes with a wealth of knowledge about the AfriCOBRA Movement, having written the forward to AfriCOBRA: Experimental Art Toward a School of Thought, published by Duke University, 2020. He is a staff writer at Artillery magazine and his work has been displayed in art galleries throughout the Inland Empire, as well as exhibits throughout the United States. May has taught courses in community colleges, universities, and prisons and will discuss his artwork in the context of community. https://richardmayart.com/

Charles Bibbs is a renowned artist who has had his work exhibited throughout the states. His art has been featured in movies and shows and he has garnered numerous awards. Charles Bibbs is a gallery owner, publisher, mentor, entrepreneur, and a long-time resident of the Inland Empire. https://www.cbibbs.com/
