An Evening with Musician and Lyricist Maritri Garrett!

Wednesday, June 15, 2022

536 W 11th Street, San Bernardino, CA 92410

On Wednesday, June 15, join Inlandia’s Blacklandia Event Series at the Garcia Center for an evening of music and inspiration with Maritri Garrett!

All are welcome!

Presented by poet and educator Romaine Washington, the program will showcase San Bernardino resident Maritri Garrett has traveled the world to encourage, inspire, and inform listeners. As a Black female musician/singer, she wants people to know it is possible to achieve – and live – their dreams. Maritri will share her journey, her challenges, her triumphs, and her “secrets” to success. Refreshments will be served.

Maritri Garrett began sharing her online program, “Reunion of Souls,” with the Facebook community during the pandemic and faithfully continued even after restrictions lifted. Followers who attended regularly began to form friendships and have conversations. It was not just Maritri’s talent that drew people in, in but her talent, uplifting positive, and open personality. Her authentic joy and ability to relate to listeners about the ups and downs of life created strong bonds with those who got to know her, even at a distance through her show.

Few singers talk about stories of love, life, and loss the way Maritri Garrett can. Her bittersweet lyrics tell “grown folks stories” in a poignant way that will break you down to the core. Her mission as a songwriter is to speak life and truth to pain, healing both herself and. She is highly respected as a teacher, singer, pianist, cellist and guitarist, while her reputation as a storyteller has earned her a fiercely loyal following from both her fans and peers. A Howard University graduate, Maritri earned a Bachelor’s degree in music composition and a Master’s in Jazz studies.

Maritri has been invited to share stages with notable artists across different genres, including Barbra Streisand, Gladys Knight, The Five Blind Boys of Alabama, Stanley Jordan, Toshi Reagon, the Indigo Girls, Patti LaBelle, Valerie Simpson, and Ani Di Franco. She has also appeared on BET as a musician and host. She has released the albums Reunion Of Souls, Enter Redemption, and If Only I could Breathe (with guitarist Nick Cassarino). In addition to her solo work, Maritri currently leads the “Soulfolk Experience,” a songwriting collective with fellow songwriters V. Jeffrey Smith and David Pilgrim. Her material is prominently featured on their compilation releases The Soulfolk Experience, Vol. 1 and their recently released Soulfolk Experience, Vol. 2.

Revising and Submitting Your Writing for Publication

with Cati Porter

FREE as part of the Inlandia Creative Writing Workshops program

Registration required: https://tinyurl.com/Inlandia-Rev-Sub

You have begun to tentatively call yourself a writer, but you don’t know how to take that next step and get your work published. Or you’ve been published but you need some accountability to kick start your summer submissions. Or maybe you have lots of drafts that could use some polishing, or even some dusting off if they’ve been in that proverbial desk drawer. In this workshop you will be given the tools and the time to work toward publication. Please note: This is NOT a writing workshop. It is recommended that at the start of the workshop you have no fewer than ten pieces of writing you would like to revise and submit.

This workshop will meet virtually every other week for five weeks but there will also be optional coaching and mentorship via email check-ins to report on progress and office hours to work one-on-one with Cati via email, Zoom, or phone, by appointment.

Inlandia Institute Executive Director Cati Porter has been publishing prose and poetry in magazines, newspapers, literary journals, and anthologies for thirty years. She is the author of ten poetry collections published with a variety of independent and nonprofit publishers. She has hosted panel discussions and roundtables on publishing, led workshops for children, teens, and adults, and conducted professional development workshops for teachers teaching poetry. She is a native of Southern California where she lives with her family.
