7:00 pm: ARTS WALK FOR BOOK LOVERS FEATURING BEN STOLTZFUS AND HIS NEW BOOK, 'FALLING AND OTHER STORIES'
October 4, 2018 –
On Thursday, October 4, at 7:00 p.m., join us for the first installment of Inlandia’s Arts Walk for Book Lovers at the Main branch of the Riverside Public Library, downtown, upstairs, on the first Thursday of every month. In October, our featured author is Ben Stoltzfus, who will be presenting and discussing his newest publication, Falling and Other Stories (Anaphora Press, 2018).
Falling and Other Stories, a novella and six short fictions, is by turn mythic and realistic, moving and wistful, innovative and traditional. It maps a wide geography of human emotions: lust, adventure, love, alienation, explicit violence and implicit passion. Ben Stoltzfus makes each character--a glamour girl, a scuba queen, a shaman, a mountain climber, a skier, a ball-court superstar, women in distress, even strangers--come vividly alive.
About Ben Stoltzfus
Ben Stoltzfus is Professor Emeritus of Comparative Literature and Creative Writing at the University of California, Riverside. He is a novelist, translator, literary critic and internationally recognized inter-arts scholar. He has published 12 monographs of literary criticism, five novels and one collection of short stories. Romoland, a pictonovel, his most recent publication, was written in collaboration with Judith Palmer, the artist. He has received many awards: Fulbright, Camargo, Gradiva, Humanities, Creative Arts, and MLA. Stoltzfus lives in Riverside, California, with Judith Palmer, his wife.
Reading will be followed by light refreshments and book sales and signing.
The Riverside Public Library is located at 3581 Mission Inn Avenue in downtown Riverside. This event is free and open to the public.

1:30 pm: CONVERSATIONS AT THE CULVER: 'DANCING IN THE SANTA ANA WINDS'
October 7, 2018 –
On Sunday, October 7, 2018, please join Inlandia as we welcome back liz gonzález as we help her celebrate the launch of her book, Dancing in the Santa Ana Winds: Poems y Cuentos New and Selected. Reading and discussion will feature Frances Vasquez in conversation with liz gonzález.
In “Dancing in the Santa Ana Winds: Poems y Cuentos New and Selected,” liz gonzález explores memories, pivotal experiences, and cultural influences that shaped her: The death of a young father, family relationships that nurture and challenge, and the joys and struggles of growing up as a nontraditional Catholic Mexican American. Set against the diverse landscapes of the San Bernardino Valley and Los Angeles, these richly textured and sometimes humorous works, real and imagined, illuminate the trials and beauty of girls’ and women’s journeys to reclaim themselves.
Suzanne Lummis writes, “[o]verlaid with the rituals and imagery of the Catholic church and 70s rock, funk, and R&B bands pouring from car radios, the Inland Empire is alive with culture, sensation and the fullness of life."

1:00 pm: CONVERSATIONS AT THE CULVER: FIRE AND RAIN: ECOPOETRY OF CALIFORNIA
November 4, 2018 –
On November 4, please join us we celebrate the publication of Fire and Rain: Ecopoetry of California. Edited by Lucille Lang Day and Ruth Nolan, with a Foreword by Dana Gioia and an Introduction by Jack Foley, Fire and Rain includes more than 250 poems by 149 contributors, including Ellen Bass, Christopher Buckley, Alison Hawthorne Deming, Camille T. Dungy, Ann Fisher-Wirth, Rebecca Foust, Dana Gioia, Rafael Jesús González, Emily Grosholz, Robert Hass, Brenda Hillman, Jane Hirshfield, Ursula K. Le Guin, Lynne Knight, Stephen Meadows, A. D. Miller, Gary Snyder, and David St. John.
Of Fire and Rain, Pattiann Rogers calls it “not only a beautiful and thorough anthology but an homage to California, its varieties of landscapes, and the amazing poetry it has evoked.”
Malcolm Margolin of Heyday reminds us "[t]he battles environmentalists fight on land, in the legislatures, or in the courts are won or lost first in the human imagination, and the range, depth, and vitality of this selection of poems will take the imagination by storm.”
"I went back to soulful, pristine, early James Taylor to make sure I was feeling the wet, cleansing urgency of Lucille Lang Day and Ruth Nolan's burning anthology. Anthology, ecology, mythology, and all the ‘ologies’ boil down to four-letter words—sacred kissing cousins—love and life”, says Al Young, former California Poet Laureate.
From the introduction, Dana Gioia, California’s current Poet Laureate, notes "Day and Nolan have done a considerable service to select and gather these poems. Their ample anthology provides a generous record of California poets’ love and concern for their common world. What more important theme can we in this golden land share?”

After retiring in 2017 from twenty years of teaching writing at Concordia University Irvine, Thea has been enjoying more opportunities to wander, write, and inspire others to "think outside the shoe" via her poems, essays, and presentations. theagavin.com; @theagavin; instagram.com/theagavin/
