“Remembering the Civil Rights Act: Looking Back While Moving Forward”

Riverside Public Library – Community Room

3900 Mission Inn Avenue, Riverside 92501

Next summer marks the 60th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, which was signed into law by President Lyndon Baines Johnson on July 2, 1964 – almost 100 years after the end of the Civil War. It was the most sweeping civil rights legislation since Reconstruction.

Yet, sixty years later, discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, and national origin remains profoundly impactful. Old issues re-emerge as new ones, in new and sometimes old ways. And so, in cooperation with the Civil Rights Institute of Southern California and the Center for Social Justice and Civil Liberties, Inlandia is proud to launch a season of civil rights-based talks for writers, readers, and other interested humans as part of our First Thursdays Arts Walk programming with Riverside Public Library. We hope you will join the conversation.

The series begins on Thursday, August 3, with “Remembering the Civil Rights Act: Looking Back While Moving Forward.” Join us for a discussion of what the Civil Rights Act meant in a political and historical context, and how it impacted America’s way forward. Hear from those who remember the times before, learn what has been accomplished since, and consider the work yet to be done.

Doors open at 6:30 PM, the program begins at 7:00. After the program, please join us as we walk across Mission Inn Avenue to visit the Civil Rights Institute from 8:00-8:30!
