10:00 am: GETTING FROM HERE TO THERE: FROM MANUSCRIPT TO BOOK

The chances of being traditionally published today are slimmer than ever. With e-book sales soaring and publishers consolidating, traditionally published books are a small minority of the 4,000 books published every day. For the vast majority of aspiring writers who want to see their works in print or in an e-book, independent publishing, self-publishing, and hybrid publishing have become the only options. But fear keeps many new writers from approaching the steep learning curve of indie publishing and self-marketing, and many of them don't know where to start.  This series of workshops will demystify the steps to indie publishing, helping fence-sitters get off the rail and into print. The five "Getting from Here to There" workshops will cover:

Session 1: Choosing your publishing path - The main considerations in choosing your publishing route. We discuss the various options from DIY to Create Space and Ingram Spark to hybrid publishers; what determines which path is best for you and what resources you need.

Session 2: Getting your book ready - Preparing your manuscript and cover. We discuss writing second, third and fourth drafts, the four types of editing, beta readers, front and back of book materials, formatting and cover design.

Session 3: Time to GO! - Publishing,  printing, and distributing.  We discuss metadata, copyrights, the importance of proofs, writing marketing copy and its uses, pricing, publishing e-books and audio books, printing and distribution.

Session 4:  Marketing essentials - The social media musts. The three essentials in marketing your book are author websites, Author Central, and an author Facebook page. We look at website options and set up a Facebook page.

Session 5: Other marketing options - Going beyond the basics. We discuss advertising, consultants, reviews, personal appearances, book give-aways, bloggers, contests and distribution options.

1:30 pm: Conversations at the Culver: No-Place is Like Home

On November 5, Inlandia will bring you a special Conversations at the Culver event, No-Place is Like Home, featuring JJ Jacobson and Juan Delgado, which draws inspiration from the current Mundos Alternos exhibit, part of the Getty Pacific Standard Time project.

From 1:30 - 3:00 pm, join us for a two-part discussion and Q&A on science fiction and the Americas. No-Place is Like Home will focus on our notions of “Latin America”. Though the inhabitants of the Americas have experienced centuries of colonization, intellectuals from various fields, including science fiction authors and artists, have complicated our understanding of “Latin American” and “Latino/a” and provided us with ways of rethinking these inventions and constructs about a region that is diverse culturally and geographically.

Make your visit to UCR ArtsBlock complete: Arrive at 12 pm and enjoy a complimentary tour of the Mundos Alternos exhibit. We will gather next door at the California Museum of Photography’s front desk to begin the tour, which will conclude with refreshments in the Culver Center prior to the start of the formal program.

JJ Jacobson holds a MS in Information from the University of Michigan School of Information. Since 2005 she has been a metadata librarian, cataloger, director of a virtual library system, rare books librarian, and collection curator. In 2015 she was appointed Jay Kay and Doris Klein Science Fiction Librarian at UC Riverside, curating the Eaton Collection of Science Fiction and Fantasy (and other genres too numerous to mention). She has previously published and presented on metadata, virtual environments, role play as a concomitant of research, virtual world librarianship, American culinary history, the Eaton Collection, and the literary genres and subgenres of speculative fiction.

Juan Delgado is the author of four books of poetry, including Green Web (Georgia University Press, (Contemporary Poetry Series Award) and A Rush of Hands (Arizona University Press). His book El Campo (Capra Press) is a collaboration with renowned artist Simón Silva, and his Vital Signs (Heyday/Inlandia Imprint) is a collaboration with photographer Thomas McGovern featuring evocative scenes of San Bernardino and the Inland Empire and recipient of an American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation. Delgado teaches Creative Writing at CSUSB. He holds an MFA from the University of California at Irvine.

1:00 pm: READING AND CELEBRATION OF CARTLESS: THE MAGAZINE

Please join Inlandia at 1 pm on Sunday November 12 for a reading and launch celebration. Cartless: The Magazine, edited by Lydia Theon Ware I, is a compilation of works written by writers in the Cartless writing workshop series. The reading and celebration will take place at the Riverside Public Library, downtown, upstairs.
Cartless: The Magazine will be available for purchase for $20. Proceeds support this program.
The Cartless workshop series was led by Lydia Theon Ware I and held in partnership with Path of Life Shelter. Cartless served Path of Life clients. Over the course of the series, Cartless worked with fourteen different writers, all of whom contributed to this magazine.
Lydia Theon Ware i is a published poet in MUSE, the Riverside City College literary magazine, and a winner of the RCC’s Student of Distinction for Creative Writing Award 2006. She is the author of “Signs” a tiny gift book, and “D.I.R.T.: “A Poem Song”. Her latest body of work is entitled Awe; Love Letters to the Most High, a praise compilation of poetry and love letters to Jesus. She is a self taught poet, an actor and a Certified Peer Support Specialist. She loves to create new words and new moments. She has spoken at five Jefferson Transitional Program’s Community Education Film Series throughout the Inland Empire. Lydia has taught poetry to the homeless population with the Riverside Art Museum’s ArtReach Grant. She has also performed her work at L.A. City College, at USC, and at UCLA. Lydia has been a Peer Artist teaching poetry at the Art Works Gallery Recovery Arts Corps. She was involved with the performance troupe Acting Out Loud in the original play “Jubilee” a play of Recovery and Hope. Currently Lydia will be teaching this summer a Ten Week Intensive called "Cartless" with the Riverside homeless population; in partnership with Inlandia Institute and The Path of Life Ministries.
