Isabel Quintero, author of the award-winning YA novel Gabi a girl in pieces, will be leading a four week teen writing workshop at the A.K. Smiley Library in Redlands. The workshop will be exploring identity, in other words, what makes us who we are. We will be writing poems and short fiction. Space is limited to 15 teens, please call (909) 798-7674 to register. Workshop dates are April 4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th 4:45-6:15 pm.

Against what T.S. Eliot once famously said, April is the opposite of cruel: It brings us spring flowers, fresh air, rain, and... poetry!

Designated by the Academy of American Poets as National Poetry Month, the Inlandia Institute, in partnership with the Riverside Art Museum and the Gluck Fellows Program of the Arts at the University of California Riverside, is taking it one step -- er, one month -- further by giving you a two-fer: We are extending National Poetry Month for two whole months: Throughout April and May, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of this national celebration of poetry, with a two-month series of poetry workshops that are FREE and open to the public and all age groups. Led by talented Gluck Fellows Emily Dorff and Nicole Olweean, these workshops will take place all April and May at the Riverside Art Museum for eight straight weeks, beginning Thursday April 7 from 6:30 - 8 pm. For additional inspiration, workshops will be held in the Powell/DeVean Gallery, where an exhibit by renowned artist Pedro Friedeberg will be on exhibit.

Emily Dorff, originally from Florida, is now a second-year poet in the MFA program at the University of California, Riverside.

Originally from Michigan, Nicole Olweean is a second year poet in UCR's MFA program. Her work has appeared in Fishladder, Menacing Hedge, and Bird's Thumb.

Scheduled Workshops:

April 7: Art Inspiring Poetry, Poetry Inspiring Art: In this workshop, we will be writing poetry after looking at paintings and reading poems, followed by exercises drawing on those works in order to create new works inspired by each other's art.

April 14: Blackout! Poetry: For this workshop, participants will bring in old books or magazines and color out words to make their own poems / bring in cardboard and construction paper to allow them to mount their own poems as a craft activity.

April 21: The Tiny Book: Have you ever wanted to make a tiny book? In this workshop, learn how to make a little book out of one sheet of paper and then create your own content based on writing prompts matching the theme of their little books.

April 28: Poems Can Be Funny, Too: In this workshop, we will read and discuss humorous poems including light verse and limericks and inspire participants to write their own funny poems.

May 5: Create-A-Card: For this workshop, we will focus on creating our greeting cards including materials and content. Who has ever picked up a greeting card and thought, I could have written that? Make your own unique, hand-made card for someone special.

May 12: Poetry in Its Natural Habitat: Spring brings out the naturalist in all of us. In this workshop, we will discuss and write nature poetry or poetry of place. We will discuss and write poetry derived from the natural landscapes that affect us.

May 19: Poems of the Body & Senses: In this workshop, we will explore ways of writing about the body, including a form of writing called Exquisite Corpse and writing from the senses.

May 26: Poetry in Translation: In this workshop, we will work on translating poems from Spanish into English, and then rewrite them again in a more "poetic" way. Then we will write own poems inspired by the translation and discuss the possibilities of translation.

About the exhibit in RAM's Powell/Devean Gallery:

Impossible Worlds: The early Works of Pedro Friedeberg

Pedro Friedeberg is one of the most prominent artist working in Mexico today with a practice that revolves around ornate, often impossible, architectural visions and humorous reflections on society. In a career spanning over six decades, Friedeberg has exhibited widely in Mexico, US and Europe. The Early Works of Pedro Friedeberg, which examines fanciful, imaginative drawings crated in the early phase of Friedebergt's carerrs, from 1953-1960. The exhibition features works in graphite, ink and acrylic from a private collection in Riverside, exhibited publicly for the first time. Carried out in mamy different styles and techniques the artworks provide new insights into the development of Friedeberg's unique vision, which is equally inspired by Mexican and European cultures. The works also demonstrate the obsessive focus on pattern and rpetition that has come to characterize Friedeber's artisitic production.
