On Thursday March 16, 2017 from 7:00pm- 8:30pm, join the Inlandia Institute for an evening with author Tod Goldberg as we present Conversations at the Culver, held at the Barbara and Art Culver Center of the Arts.

The Barbara and Art Culver Center of the Arts is located at 3834 Main St, Riverside, CA 92501.

Tod Goldberg, nicknamed "the Todfather" due to his love for writing crime fiction, will be present for a reading and conversation.

Tod Goldberg is the New York Times bestselling author of over a dozen books, including the novels The House of Secrets (Grand Central), which he co-authored with New York Times bestselling author Brad Meltzer, Gangsterland (Counterpoint), a finalist for the Hammett Prize, Living Dead Girl (Soho Press), a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, Fake Liar Cheat (Pocket Books/MTV), and five installments of the popular Burn Notice series: The Fix, The Endgame, The Giveaway, The Reformed, and The Bad Beat. He is also the author of two prize-winning story collections, Simplify, which was finalist for the SCIBA Award for Fiction and Winner of the Other Voices Short Story Collection Prize, and Other Resort Cities, both published by OV Books. His books have been translated into German, Italian, Dutch, Bulgarian, Hungarian, French, and published throughout the United Kingdom and Australia.

Tod Goldberg holds an MFA in Creative Writing & Literature from Bennington College and directs the Low Residency MFA Program in Creative Writing and Writing for the Performing Arts at the University of California, Riverside. He lives in Indio, CA with his wife, the writer Wendy Duren. His next book, a sequel to Gangsterland, will be released in Fall 2017.

Each month through June we will be exploring the range of poetry that exists in the Inland Empire, from the Beat tradition to the Indian diaspora, from desert to ecology to spoken word, and more. About the artist, Linda J Phelps Young: Ms. Young is a California native, born in Riverside CA. She worked for 6 years as an Art Instructor with the Riverside Arts Council in conjunction RUSD after school program the Hearts and Prime Time program. Her series of paintings, titled "Our Ladies of Blues" was created in 2007. The series commemorates Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith, Josephine Baker, Ethel Waters and Ella Fitzgerald. Palm Canyon Dr * Palm Springs, CA 92262 WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: Getting from Here to There: An Inlandia Indie Publishing Workshop with Marj Charlier The chances of being traditionally published these days are as slim as they've ever been. With e-book sales soaring and publishers consolidating, traditionally published books are now a small minority of the 4,000 new books published every day. For the vast majority of aspiring writers who want to see their works in print, independent publishing, self-publishing, and subsidy publishing have become better options. But fear keeps many new writers from approaching the steep learning curve of indie publishing and self-marketing, and many of them don't know where to start. The common lament: "I have a memoir/novel/collection of short stories, but I don't know where to go from here." This series of workshops will demystify the steps to indie publishing, helping fence sitters get off the rail and into print. With e-book sales soaring and publishers consolidating, traditionally published books are now a small minority of the 4,000 new books published every day. For the vast majority of aspiring writers who want to see their works in print, independent publishing, self-publishing, and subsidy publishing have become better options. But fear keeps many new writers from approaching the steep learning curve of indie publishing and self-marketing, and many of them don't know where to start. The common lament: "I have a memoir/novel/collection of short stories, but I don't know where to go from here." This series of workshops will demystify the steps to indie publishing, helping fence sitters get off the rail and into print. Map More	25 5:00 pm: THE POWER OF PLACE: EXPLORING THE ROLE OF LANDSCAPE IN NARRATIVE 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm March 25, 2017 How do landscape and geography influence plot and character? How can they shape the structure and feeling of a story? Whether the landscape of your story is the interior of a car, a mountain range, a kitchen, a big city, or an emotional terrain, it should be portrayed clearly. This three-hour class with author Deanne Stillman will explore the role of place in narrative in the work of writers like Jon Krakauer, Joyce Carol Oates, and Rick Bass, and how you can apply similar techniques to your own work. Deanne's own work is place-based (generally the Mojave Desert), and will be discussed as well. The second half will focus on how individuals can apply the range of examples to their own works-in-progress, or p...erhaps lead to new pieces of writing. This workshop will be held on Saturday March 25 from 4 - 7 pm at the Ameal Moore Nature Center, located at the stunning Sycamore Canyon Park (https://mysycamorecanyon.com/). Her latest book, Blood Brothers, is coming this fall from Simon and Schuster. She also wrote Desert Reckoning, based on a Rolling Stone piece that was a finalist for a PEN Center USA journalism award. It won the 2013 Spur Award and LA Press Club Award for best nonfiction, and received great reviews in Kirkus, PW, the LA Review of Books, Denver Post, and elsewhere. Her previous book was Mustang, an LA Times "Best Book 2008" and winner of the California Book Award silver medal for nonfiction. It's currently under option for a film starring Wendie Malick and the all-star audio edition with Anjelica Huston, John Densmore, Frances Fisher and others was recently released. In addition, she wrote Twentynine Palms, an LA Times "best book of the year" which Hunter Thompson called "A strange and brilliant story by an important American writer". This workshop will led by Micah Tasaka and will take place on the campus of San Bernardino Valley College. This workshop is open to anyone who identifies as a queer/trans* person of color or is a queer/trans-identified ally to people of color. In this workshop, discussion topics will include the legacy of queer of color writers who often get overlooked in most creative writing classes, as well as the writing process: developing ideas, creating poetry, and revision. This will be an interactive workshop involving guided free writes, group writing, and sharing work created in the workshop. This is a safe space open to anyone who identifies as queer or trans. Micah Tasaka is a queer biracial poet from the Inland Empire exploring the intersections of identity, spirituality, gender, sexuality, and recovering from trauma. They received their undergraduate degree in creative writing from the University of California, Riverside. They have performed throughout Southern California and have featured in Riverside, Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Palm Springs. Their debut chapbook, Whales in the Watertank, was self-published in 2014. They have been featured on The Blood Jet Writing Hour literary blog, and their work was published in the In The Words Of Women 2016 International Anthology and Inlandia: A Literary Journey, Volume VI, Issue I, Spring 2016.
