On Sunday February 7 at 2 pm LitLandia brings you two outstanding poets, Tony Barnstone & Karen Greenbaum-Maya, followed by an open mic. Hosted by Judy Kronenfeld, this event will be held at the Canyon Crest Winery, located at 5225 Canyon Crest Drive Suite 7A Riverside, CA 92507. LitLandia is a joint quarterly reading series which brings together emerging and established authors from throughout the region and beyond, drawn from the pages of the literary journals Inlandia: A Literary Journey and Poemeleon: A Journal of Poetry. Founded in 2005, Poemeleon: A Journal of Poetry is a nationally-recognized online literary magazine which has previously hosted an annual summer reading series in Riverside. In 2010, the Inlandia Institute founded Inlandia: A Literary Journey as a means of spotlighting the authors who work or write in and/or about Inland Southern California. The event is free and open to the public but there is a one-drink minimum (alcoholic or non- alcoholic). Light snacks will be provided. Book sales & signing to follow the reading. Tony Barnstone is a Professor of English at Whittier College and the author of 18 books. He is a prolific poet, author, essayist, and literary translator. In addition to his numerous published books, his work has appeared in dozens of American literary journals, from APR to Poetry. His books of poetry are Impure (1999); the chapbook Naked Magic (2002); Sad Jazz: Sonnets (2005),;The Golem of Los Angeles (2007); Tongue of War: From Pearl Harbor to Nagasaki (2009); a bilingual selected poetry, Buda en Llamas/Buddha in Flames: Antología Poética (2014), translated by Mariano Zaro; Beast in the Apartment (2014); and the graphic poetry collection Pulp Sonnets (2015), based on 20 years of research into classic pulp fiction, Gothic literature, B movies and comic books, illustrated by Amin Mansouri. Barnstone has also translated many books from the Chinese and is the editor of several world literature textbooks and the anthologies Poems Dead and Undead (2014) and Monster Verse: Human and Inhuman Poems (2015). With singer-songwriters John Clinebell and Ariana Hall he put out a CD of original music based on his poetry, Tokyo Burning: World War II Songs, available on CD Baby, Spotify and Amazon.com. Among his awards: NEA, NEH, California Arts Council, the Poets Prize, Grand Prize of the Strokestown International Poetry Festival, Pushcart Prize in Poetry, Benjamin Saltman Award in Poetry, Pablo Neruda Prize in Poetry, Silver Award of the Independent Publishers Book Awards, and the John Ciardi Prize in Poetry. Karen Greenbaum-Maya is a retired clinical psychologist who knows many words. From 1998 to 2003, she reviewed restaurants for the Claremont Courier, sometimes in heroic couplets, sometimes in anapest, sometimes imitating Hemingway. She always carries a camera. In an earlier life, she was a German Lit major, read poetry for credit, and lived for Art, earning a BA from Reed College, and later a PhD from the California School of Professional Psychology. She worked as a clinical psychologist for 35 years. After a long hiatus, she resumed writing poetry in 2007. Since then, her poems and photos have been published in more than 70 somewhat interesting journals. She received a Pushcart Prize nomination in 2010 and another in 2014. She lives in Claremont with Walter Maya, her husband of 31 years. Karen has been taken for a native in Munich, Portland, New York, and Paris. She co-hosts Claremont's long- standing poetry series, Fourth Sundays. Chapbooks Eggs Satori and Burrowing Song are published by Kattywompus Press.
