Book banning might seem like the stuff of earlier times and foreign places – the very term evokes a pile of flaming literature from wartime Germany or Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 – yet the resurgence of book banning in the 2020s is a real-time, real-life concern. School boards and other political entities have caused certain books to be prohibited or restricted on a variety of grounds, including the personal discomfort of a single individual. According to PBS News, “book ban attempts soared in 2022.”

Please join Inlandia – in partnership with Riverside Public Library, the Civil Rights Institute of Inland Southern California, and the Center for Social Justice and Civil Liberties – at Riverside Main Library at 7:00 PM on September 7 for a discussion on the resurgence of book banning in the 2020s. The evening will include readings of favorite banned books by community members interlaced with conversation, a call to action, and a tour of the Civil Rights Institute, located directly across the street from the library.

The library will provide an array of banned and challenged books available for check out. Don’t have a library card? You can get one on the spot!

The Civil Rights Institute will also host a Downtowne Book Store pop-up bookstore where you may purchase books for yourself and/or for donation to the new Project Legacy campus in Riverside, which serves area homeless people in vulnerable populations, including LGBTQ+, youths, older residents, veterans, and those with chronic health conditions or disabilities.

Curious about what books have been banned, censored, or challenged? A partial list includes To Kill a Mockingbird, 1984, The Diary of a Young Girl, The Handmaid’s Tale, Grapes of Wrath, books from the Harry Potter series, and The Bluest Eye. There are many, many more.

James Coats is an author, poet, and educator born in Los Angeles and raised in the Inland Empire. He received his BFA from Cal Poly Pomona and his MBA from Cal State San Bernardino. They are drawn from personal experience. Micro memoirs combine truth-telling with narrative tension and are specific to the writer’s micro-memory. Join instructor David Puma for this in-person workshop at Riverside Main Library as participants unleash the power of micro memoir. David Puma obtained his M.F.A. in creative writing at San Jose State University and his B.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Redlands. He has been in advanced poetry workshops every semester for the last four years, and has performed spoken word across California, including the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and the Inland Empire – as well as in New York City and in London, U.K. Professionally, David’s poetry has been included on streaming platforms like Disney+. Victoria Waddle is a Pushcart Prize-nominated writer, with fiction and nonfiction published in literary journals and anthologies, including in Best Short Stories from The Saturday Evening Post Great American Fiction Contest. A collection of her short fiction, Acts of Contrition, is available from Los Nietos Press and her chapbook, The Mortality of Dogs and Humans, is available from Bamboo Dart Press. A book talk is scheduled for Saturday, June 8, at 12:00 PM, at the Maloof Home, Gardens, and Gallery in Rancho Cucamonga, and will include a discussion of the author’s extraordinary experiences living in—and leaving—Iran, accompanied by selected readings and book signing by the author. Exit Prohibited explores a side of Iran and Iranians seldom portrayed in popular media. It follows Ellen Estilai and her family after the 1979 Iranian Revolution as they attempt to leave Tehran, their home of nine years. At the airport, Ali, her Iranian husband, is inexplicably prevented from leaving. As he confronts hostile colleagues and the Islamic Republic’s opaque bureaucracy, Estilai examines their lives, trying to understand what might have brought them to this point. It is a story of an Iran that is at once welcoming and hostile, progressive and traditional, enamored of and distrustful of the West—an Iran as complex as Estilai’s relationship to it. Ellen Estilai has spent much of her career collaborating with artists, writers, and agencies to strengthen communities through the arts. She has served as the executive director of the Riverside Arts Council and the Arts Council for San Bernardino County, and has taught English language, literature, and writing in universities in Iran and California. Because Ellen and her husband have been immigrants in each other’s countries, her writing frequently explores the joys and tribulations of the immigrant experience. 9 Art Appreciation for Ekphrastic Poets and Writers with Jane Edberg and John Brantingham June 9, 2024 Sunday, June 9, 2024 Art Appreciation for Ekphrastic Poets and Writers with Jane Edberg and John Brantingham 8-Week Asynchronous Writing Boot Camp $150; to register: https://tinyurl.com/EkphrasticBootCamp In this 8-week asynchronous boot camp, participants will learn the artistic techniques – along with the design elements and principles – that artists use, and how understanding an artist's approach can enhance a poet's conversation of a work. An exploration of two- and three-dimensional art pieces will provide visual examples ranging from unusual contemporary work to old classics to ancient art. This class is open to all levels of experience, from the beginner to the professional writer. Prompts and an open forum will create opportunities for feedback from instructors and fellow writers. Jane Edberg holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of California, Davis with an emphasis in photography, painting, and performance art. She taught photography and art for thirty years, retiring after twenty years at Gavilan College. Her art has been published and exhibited internationally. Jane is the author of the art illuminated memoir, The Fine Art of Grieving, published by Linen Press Books, 2024. Her writing is featured in the books, Death, and its Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Beautiful Lessons: Field Notes from The Death Dialogues Project; Sasse Museum of Art: Terry Givens Ekphrasis Collection; My Dead, Kelsey Books, 2024, in the flash anthology, BAM 42 Stories (to be released October 2024); and in journals, including Cholla Needles, and Gyroscope Review.
